Yoga for Seniors: a podcast feature

One of our lovely teachers, Chintamani Kansas, was recently interviewed on The Mentors Sessions Podcast with Francesca Cervero.

The episode focuses on Yoga for older Adults: together, Chintamani and Francesca discuss many topics ranging from perspectives on teaching seniors, to injury prevention and tips on adapting specific yoga poses using knowledge of biomechanics.

Whether you are a teacher who is interested in expanding your knowledge, or perhaps you are becoming older yourself and want to approach your yoga practice safely; this podcast episode has some excellent information to help you out.

In particular, Chintamani and Francesca talked about:

  • common injuries and conditions our students might have

  • three rules to keep in mind when teaching people with osteoporosis

  • some thoughts about twists in a Yoga for Seniors class

  • how to make a “flowy” sequence without the forward bends of a classical sun salutation

  • step by step cueing for Downward Dog and why it’s so helpful for seniors

  • the kyphosis controversy around bridge pose and how to work with that

  • working with hip replacements and how it shows up in Garuda

  • the controversy around Side Plank and who it might be good for

  • a deep dive into the biomechanics of Child’s Pose and how to make it accessible

  • how using empowering language makes you a better teacher for all populations

The podcast is available on all major platforms, including Spotify, Stitcher and iTunes.
